FF#4: Wacky Tobacky?

FreeWrite #4:

After I took my daughter to the bus stop this morning, I just had to go back to bed for a bit. Some mornings are like that. I guess I didn’t get much sleep last night. But, I’m thinking that I didn’t get much sleep this morning either because I had a freaky dream. There was this guy with long dark hair and he was in our house rifling through the kitchen cupboards. I think my son invited him in. They seemed to know one another. And then my daughter came into the room, looking curiously at this guy and I just shrugged. The next thing I knew he handed something to my son and then walked into my lliving room and asked if he could use one of our computers. Somebody must have said ‘yes’ because he did. Only, when he sat down at the desk he became someone else, like he split into two people, you know, because now there was one guy at the desk and the first guy standing up scanning all the pictures and whatnot on my walls, and he said, “Oh, I can see all that you have hidden here.” And so I humoured the guy by asking what he saw, as if there really was anythhing hidden. And he takes this painting off of the wall and starts pointing out ‘hidden’ things. And I’m wondering, where the hell did that Star Wars, Darth Vader painting come from? How odd? But still, I just played along. And then there was a knock at the door and the guy walked over as if to answer it, but instead, he removed his top hat and out stepped a really, really tall (leggy) redheaded woman. And I said, “Hum. Neat trick.” And then the guy at the computer got up and said, “They’re coming. We have to get ready.” And the next thing I know, I’m in a different room with the three strangers and they are telling me to ‘get down’ and ‘be quiet’ because one of their agents is about to come through my back door and shoot the bad guy in the other room. BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! …WHAT?! I ran into the other room as cops were filling in throught the back door. I ran to my son who had been sleeping and now he was all wide-eyed and confused. I asked if he was okay and then escorted him out of that room and into the living room. But along the way I couldn’t help but sneak a peek… The cops were taking the body out of the room. It was covered with a white sheet, but there was blood seeping through and I saw the top of the dead guy’s head, just some of his matted hair poking out from the top, and then they carried him out the door. When I got to the living room the three strangers were just slipping out the front door and they winked at us right before they…

Times up! The following is just extra…

Boy. That was weird. Just so you know, I was going to type ‘disappeared’. They just went ‘POOF!’ I don’t know why they bothered to use the door then. There were a few other details to this dream that didn’t make it into this post, mostly because I didn’t remember them at the time I should have typed them, so I just moved along. But I just have to say, there was one point where a cigarette was asked for, and the most unusual ‘peace pipe’ I’ve ever seen was given in its stead. Wacky tobacky?

Um, yeah. It is SO time for a cup of coffee now.

Have a terrific Friday!

What is freewriting?

Freewriting : An informal writing activity that allows one to write “freely” without concern for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and other constraints. No editing is done. Typically, in this exercise, one is directed to write without stopping for a set period of time (usually just a few minutes). Currently, we have chosen five (5) minutes for our Freewrite Friday. The choice of topic is entirely up to you, whatever is in your head at the moment you begin to type. Have at it!

Bob and stuff…

Posted on Thursday 28 February 2008

To quote myself in an earlier comment response: “Bob is doing much better. He still has some aches and sharp pains from time to time, but he’s recovering. The doc bummed him out by telling him that he had to keep his sling/immobilizer on for another six weeks. He hates the confinement, not being able to move as he would like to. But, the good news is that he doesn’t need surgery to repair the fractured bone. The doctor said that he should heal completely in about three months.”

He has had to sleep sitting up, as the doctor recommended. So he’s snoring away on the couch right now.

As for me, I’m sitting here at my desk waiting on the cable guy. For the past month or so, my modem has been giving me fits. And in the last week, it has dumped us from the Internet several times a day. Grrr…argh! So I called the cable company yesterday and requested a replacement.

Anyone want to lay odds on what time the cable guy will arrive, if at all? I almost considered skipping my shower this morning. You know, because it would just figure if that wound up being the time the cable guy knocked on my door. But, I took the shower anyway. I’m supposed to receive a phone call when the cable guy is on his way, but I betcha I don’t.

In the meantime, I think I’ll peruse some of my favorite blogs and then try to get some fiction writing accomplished.

What are you doing today? It’s Thursday, you know. Do you watch Survivor? If so, who are you rooting for? I haven’t made up my mind yet.

Upgrade: Fixed it!

Posted on Monday 25 February 2008

When I upgraded to 2.3 the links in my sidebar went haywire. I had to change a bit of php in order to fix it. It seems that WordPress 2.3 had ruled my old php null and void. Nice of ‘em to let me know.

Actually, when I looked up Template Tags at Wordpress, they mentioned that some of the 2.2 sidebar php was ‘Deprecated‘. I guessed that was php geek-talk for ‘Defunct‘. Thankfully, WordPress was kind enough to post the new and shiny php that was needed to replace the old.

…And that was all a bit more wordy than I had intended.

But since you’re here still, why not have a look at the new “Writer’s Corner” in my left sidebar. If you’re a writer, or if you’ve ever wanted to write a book, there is some awesome information over there. I’ve read (and highly recommend) both the “Create A Plot” clinic, and the “How To Find Your Writing Discipline” by Holly Lisle. Excellent tools for writers!

So, that’s about it. I did housework (laundry…ugh), tweaked php most of the day, and watched “Across The Universe” on DVD this evening. Wow. I lead an exciting life.

Tomorrow morning (7:00am), I have to take Bob to the Orthopaedic. So I’m off to dreamland now. I hope. Well, I’ll settle for sleep without dreams tonight, just so long as I get the sleep.

How was your Monday?

Mytharia: If You Can’t Fly, Float.

Posted on Saturday 23 February 2008

I need you to don your Imagination Cap for a moment, if you please.

Imagine that you are sailing on The Sea of Mysts, which is a lot like flying through the sky in a sailboat, but not exactly. The Sea of Mysts contains, well… mist, and therefore we have some water to go along with our ships. If you sail too close to the edge of the Myst, you’ll drop down into the Sea of Perils. I wouldn’t recommend that route.

Moving along…

Your ship is called ‘The Hand’, and is run by a Captain Skaer who is of lupine blood. He’s a rather charming seadog, but then, that’s another story. Our crew is comprised of a variety of Mytharia beings, all humanoid in appearace, with mythical and/or animal heritages coursing through their veins. At the moment, Captain Skaer’s ship is being attacked by pirates in a soot-colored ship. Pirates! And in the middle of this great battle, the soot ship suddenly goes ‘KABOOM!’

Here then, begins my post:

Pouring power into an abrupt, iridescent-winged dive, Mitzi outraced all the other debris, dodging accordingly, until the pixie-feline came upon the object of her curiosity. There was no mistaking what she saw, or for that matter, what she did not.

Vellorian!

Though what was left of his facial skin flapped like an unsecured sail in brisk winds; his clothes naught but tatters; it was unmistakably, and quite surprisingly, him. …or what was left of him. And at this very moment, it was not so much that Mitzi hoped to save Vellorian’s life, for that appeared highly unlikely given the damage he had sustained from the blast. No. She was ever the more intrigued. Like a child certain of priceless treasures in a handful of worthless river stones, Mitzi knew that she had discovered a fairy tale come true! Here was a relic of the old ages blankly staring her in the face; a pile of mechanoid rubble that held a special sheen in her delighted eyes. Though, momentarily, she could not call to words the reason why. Perhaps it was the involuntary swallowing of rushing winds that preoccupied her thoughts.

Snaking a hand out into the Mysts, Mitzi grabbed hold of Vellorian, extending and digging claws into metal. First one hand, and then the other. With a growl of determination, she urged her muscles to obey, turning and fighting for an upward flight. But at the very most, she only served to slow their mad descent. Vellorian was too heavy! She could not carry him alone. And it was wholly unacceptable to Mitzi that she should allow him to fall into oblivion.

…Oblivion. By the gods! They were both falling further and further away from Captain Skaer’s ship, spiraling through dangerous, unfamiliar Mysts. How long would it be before they were lost forever? Were there currents in the Mysts? Was she still under the ship? Swallowing back her fear, Mitzi refused to accept defeat. She forced her mind to search for ideas. Keen eyes of violet darted hither and yon, until at last she honed in on a blackened barrel as it hurled down through the Mysts. …up and to her right.

If I can gauge it just right… change that barrel into a Myst-sailing lifeboat at the opportune moment… we will both fall safely within the floorboards. And then Dagulos will rescue me from there. That’s it! It’ll work. I know it will.

Twisting in flight, Mitzi allowed her arms to go slack, temporarily relieving the agonizing burn that tore through her muscles. Sliding Vellorian’s weight down the front of her body, she eased her thighs under robotic arms, hooked ankles together across a metal chest, and curled her long, black tail around his body for extra support. With her arms freed, Mitzi threw her upper body backwards; arms outstretched, reaching, using her hands as a focus to shape the magic.

The voice of the Fae left her lips as Mitzi whispered first for Artemis’ guidance, and then began to recite her infamous incantation: Maranwe’s Marvelous Modifications (aka ‘Mix-ups’, to those in the know). She would not think on that last thought, however; best to concentrate on the desired result.

…And then holler like a banshee for her Draco.

FF #3: Egads!

FreeWrite #3:

I’m tired. I have swollen zombie eyes this morning. I don’t know why because I went to bed at midnight instead of 3 am, which is what time i’ve been going to sleep. My capslock key keeps giving me fits. It’s like there is something stuck underneath it that keeps the key from being pushed all the way down, but every time i pop the key to look, I find nothing. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, which is why most of my ‘i’s’ do not get capitalized. My hubby fell down and broke his crown yesterday, but his name isn’t Jack. Actually, I fib. His name is Jack. Actually, I fib again. His name is Bob and he didn’t actually break his crown. He dislocated and fractured his left shoulder. Ouch! I spent about 4 hours in the ER with him. That’ll teach him to climb on shelves, eh? Poor guy… wait-a-minute! He has Vicodin and muscle relaxants. Lucky guy! I can’t think of anything else to say right now. And guess what, that’s a good thing ‘cuz I’ve got about 3 seconds left to…

Times up!
